Bloggers’ Quilt Festival: Spring 2012

by Nicole
Are you as excited about Bloggers’ Quilt Festival as I am?!?
Amy's Creative Side
I’ve ooh’d and ahh’d over all the amazing quilts in past festivals and am happy to add my little quilt to this year’s festival.

Me and my quilt
“Over and Under” is my first bed size quilt that I quilted on my home machine. It fits my queen sized bed and is a major victory for me.

over and under

Eleven years ago, I was a beginner quilter who after making two baby quilts decided it was time to make quilt for my bed. Ambitious, I know!

I finished the top, but quickly got frustrated with the quilting and gave up. That quilt is still a UFO somewhere deep in one of my closets. I avoided making a bed sized quilt until a few months ago when I found a quilt pattern that I just had to try.

Scrappy3
Working on this quilt was not easy. I had to encourage myself to keep at it and get it done. I came through it having learned a lot about quilting a big quilt on a small machine. I put together a few tips in the hopes of encouraging other quilters to give it a try.
Scrappy2

Once I got this quilt finished, I felt so accomplished that I started planning my next big quilt!

Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy the festival!

I LOVE your quilt. Beautiful color and great stitches.

Margaret May 18, 2012 - 2:47 pm

Awesome quilt. I really like that pattern and the quilting is perfect. I make a lot of bed sized quilts but I always send them out to my long arm quilter to quilt. I admire anyone who does their own quilting by machine.

Sarcastic Quilter May 18, 2012 - 3:01 pm

Beautiful! I'm so happy for you for perservering through the process. Your photos are just lovely, too.

I get so frustrated even quilting table mats on my domestic machine but years ago caved and bought a mid-arm and frame as my "toy" so I wouldn't give up on the process at all. I am in awe of those who manage such great projects with their home machines… I'm in awe of you.

So, so pretty.

Hi Nicole, your quilt is beautiful. Your fabric choices on white are crisp. Love the photo too.

Annie May 18, 2012 - 3:31 pm

Beautiul, beautiful quilt! I love the fabrics, colors and the design! Great job with the quilting. Sending quilts out to a longarmer is fine, but there's nothing like the feeling of quilting it yourself and knowing that you made the whole thing, start to finish! Well done Nicole!

CitricSugar May 18, 2012 - 3:42 pm

It's beautiful. A lovely mix of tradition and modern, complexity and simplicity.

You did a great job — I'm amazed that you quilted such nice, close-together lines on a little machine! I was one of those people who tried quilting a queen-sized one on an eensy machine and vowed never to do it again… my solution was to get a bigger machine one, though. ;D

Dorothy May 19, 2012 - 2:32 pm
