Let the Scrap Attack Begin!

by Nicole

A couple of months ago, I was the lucky winner of a giveaway from Kim over at Magnolia Bay Quilts. She was giving away a copy of her book, Scrap-basket Sensations. I had borrowed the book from the library only a couple of weeks before the giveaway and was thrilled to find out that I’d have my own copy. And what perfect timing for the Scrap Attack!

Kim autographed the book with a little note to me. How sweet!

There are a few quilts in the book that caught my eye. This one is among my favorites.

So this weekend, I started pulling out my scraps to make a green-purple-blue version of this quilt.

I always like to make a few blocks before cutting all my pieces for a quilt. This way I can see what it will look like and decide if I need to make any adjustments in the fabrics.

Here’s a section of four blocks.

It is really big at 24″ x 24″. I’m thinking that I’ll add a bit more blue. I’m also thinking I’ll add a few extra blocks to make the quilt bigger than the one in the book.

I’m really liking this one. I’ve even got some ideas for the quilting, which I usually don’t think about until after I’ve pieced the top. I’m debating between FMQ and straight lines, although I think straight lines will win because this will be a big one making FMQ on my little machine a challenge. It would be nice though to add FMQ to the center where the four blocks meet. Decisions, decisions.

Four blocks down, 32 to go!

By the way, you can check out a preview of all the quilts in Kim’s book here.

I just recently got this book from the library and honestly, not much caught my eye. But now that I see your lovely block I might change my mind! I think it's the fabrics used in the book that didn't appeal? I don't know, they seemed to use a lot of batiks.

I still have the book though so I might take another flip through it!

I love blocks that look intricate and complicated but turn out to be pretty logical and doable. This quilt is going to be great and I love the colors!
