“Starburst” Finished!

by Nicole

Remember this stacks of squares that waited so patiently while I worked on other quilts?

Look what they became!

I’m calling it, “Starburst!” I think it might be my new favorite. It’s hanging in my office and is a source of radiance against the white walls.

I was inspired to make this quilt after reading Gwen Marston’s book on Liberated Quiltmaking. With liberated quiltmaking, you take the focus off measurements and precision and focus instead on having fun making a quilt. If you haven’t tried it, you’re in for a treat if you give it a go!

I wanted to continue the liberation into the quilting. I opted for random straight lines. Here are a couple of close ups.

I find quilting random straight lines to be more challenging than regular straight line quilting. The challenge is in making sure the line doesn’t curve as you stitch the length of the quilt. It is also a challenge to make sure that the lines are evenly distributed across the quilt.

Here’s a close up of the back so you can better see the random lines.

It measures 45″ x 45″.

Now, for that little mini I’ve got brewing in my mind!

Lovely! I think it's neat how my eye either sees the 4 pointed stars, or the squares with 12 triangles and both patterns are interesting.
