Stringtastic!

by Nicole

I felt fantastic when I finished this quilt, so I’m calling it “Stringtastic!” Not only was I relieved to get it done, but also satisfied with how it turned out.

I went a little out of my comfort zone with the orange and aqua palette. I tried sneaking in a bit of pink – y’all know I love my pink! – but it just didn’t fit so I left it out. Even with the bright orange fabrics, to me there is something serene about this quilt. I think adding the grey helps to calm the orange down.

Stringtastic

I did quite a bit of quilting and used up nearly a whole spool of Aurafil. That’s nearly 1,400 yards of thread!
I quilted a flower in the center of the blocks and surrounded it with some straight lines, followed by loops.

Here’s a look at the back. I added a some flying geese just because I have a soft spot for flying geese!

From the back, you can get a better view of the quilting.

At 48″ by 64″ this quilt is a great size for sitting on the couch and watching TV. But it will be a while before I get to use this quilt for TV watching. Right now, it sits in Thimble Pleasures where it will be a sample for the string class I’m teaching in January.

If you are in the Chapel Hill, NC area and have always wanted to learn how to make a string quilt, be on the look out for the class. A little bird over at Thimble Pleasures told me the class schedule will be up in early December.

Now, that this quilt is done, I’m re-grouping to figure out what’s next. As usual, there’s so much fabric and so little time!

Wishing you a great weekend!

I can't believe you did that on a domestic machine. That is some very impressive quilting.

Gertie Pye November 16, 2012 - 11:52 am

Totally blown away by how amazing your quilting is. You don't need a long arm – you do just fine on a home machine! I think I could practise for 10 years and never get as good as that. Love the colour combo too x

Nicole, this is a gorgeous string quilt! I really love how you quilted it and how that looks on the back. And you're right – the grays and blues tamed that orange right down. 🙂

You are amazing, you call it stringtastic and i call it stunning. I wish i lived near you to take your class. I have never seen a more talented quilting artist. I would love to know how you became so awesome with color – was it trial and error or just a gift?

mamalovequilts@gmail.com November 17, 2012 - 8:00 am

Thanks, Hedda! You are very kind! Regarding color, I think some of it is trial and error and some of it is intuition. I originally was going to include some darker blues and oranges, but after making a few blocks, it didn't feel right so I took them out. I followed my gut!

Susan November 16, 2012 - 5:44 pm

Like everyone else, I'm totally impressed with the quilt. I, too, would be taking the class if I were closer.

Alice November 18, 2012 - 2:40 am

I'll echo the previous comments, the quilt is beautiful, and your quilting is impressive. Do you do that free motion, or are those patterns options on your machine? I've never quilted more than straight lines on my machine!

Linda November 19, 2012 - 7:27 am
