Happy Hexagon Trivet

When I first flipped through Ayumi Takahashi’s Patchwork, Please!, I knew I wanted to make the Happy Hexagon Trivet or maybe two or three or six of them!

Here’s my version of the trivet.

I used the Ruby Star Sparkle I picked up on vacation for the center and rummaged through my scraps for the other fabrics. I must say that these trivets are great scrap busters!

I had a hard time deciding on a backing fabric that would complement the front. So instead I decided to make the trivet reversible by using more of the Ruby Star Sparkle fabric on the back.

I paper pieced the center and the first round using the pattern in the book and then extended the lines of the next round to make one big round. After sandwiching the layers, I matched up the front and back center hexagons by inserting pins in the corners of the hexagons to make sure they were lined up.

I had a few false starts with the quilting as I tried to decide what type of quilting to do. I ended up going with a 1/8″ outline of the center hexagon and a 1/16″ outline of the beige triangles.

This was the first time that I’ve sewn a binding on a hexagon. I was a bit nervous anticipating a binding nightmare, but thanks to the great illustrations in Patchwork, Please, the binding went on smoothly.

This trivet will be one of three I’m making as a gift for a dear friend of mine. One down, two to go!
