I Spy…

by Nicole

… a finished quilt!

Treasure Boxes2_Full

For the past week, I have trying to finish this I-spy quilt that I started last year for my 2-year old daughter. I used the same approach that I took to making the Treasure Boxes quilt for my 5-year old. I used improvisational piecing and kept things simple by framing the I-spy fabrics in log cabin blocks. This time I used prints and solids in red, orange, pink and gray.

I considered quilting a geometric square pattern to complement the log cabin blocks. Here I was trying the squares on scrap fabric.

In the end, I decided to keep the quilting simple to match the minimalism of the blocks.

I’m glad that I did. I love the texture of the wavy lines.

I backed the quilt in flannel because Baby Girl loves her quilts soft.

It feels good to get a work in progress off my list!

Really sweet, Nicole! was the quilting a 'stitch' on your machine or did you do it by guiding it?

Aw. So precious! I can't help but smile at your signature pink and orange color combo – it's so happy. It's so fun making quilts for the wee ones, isn't it?

Darling quilt! The quilting is perfect on it! I'm curious, what kind of longarm do you have? I'm doing my research to hopefully purchase one this spring, so I'd love to hear your thoughts about the one you use! Thanks. 🙂

If I ever do an I spy quilt, I'm going to do it like yours, with some negative space between the print fabrics. You can see each image so much better.

Nicole, I was just wondering.. on your I Spy quilt…I see you have FMQ'ed it all over with a straight stitch, even across the item to "spy". Is it easy to see the item or does the stitching make it harder to see? With a larger square to see, I wouldn't think it would be problem, but with smaller pieces (like the 2" ones that I will be working with after the 3" ones) I was thinking to FMQ around the little square for this reason..what is your experience with doing FMQ on smaller squares?
