When your husband suggests that it may be time for a new bag, it’s a good sign that it’s time! My husband made that comment a couple of months ago and I just got around to making a new one this weekend. I will admit that the bag I’ve been using is a bit worn and ready to be retired.
A few weeks ago, I went searching for new fabric for a bag and picked up these lovelies at my LQS. They are from Denyse Schmidt’s Chicopee collection. They waited patiently on my table while I went through my string quilt frenzy.
Look what they became – my new messenger bag!
Although I don’t consider myself a huge orange fan, I love this shade. It is a rusty, golden type of orange, a color that reminds me of autumn, making this a perfect bag for the upcoming season.
I used a pattern from 1, 2, 3 Sew by Ellen Luckett Baker. It’s a great book for learning basic sewing projects. From napkins to baby blankets, this book has clear and simple instructions and helps you to build your sewing skills.
I adapted the pattern so that instead of pleats, I made the front flap plain and a bit longer than in the pattern. I also added interfacing and an interlining of canvas to give the bag extra structure and metal feet to protect the bottom of the bag.
I placed a couple of pockets inside and a loop to attach my keys. They’ll be no more fishing around for them in this bag!
I finished this bag just in time for the start of a new work week and the return of {Sew} Modern Monday!

Very pretty. I love the simple, red fabric. I also like your photos. What do you use for the white background?
Great bag! I have the same red fabric that I have not had time to cut into yet, but it is waiting patiently for me :). I love it!
My goodness it is a brave husband who says his wife needs a new bag! But I'm glad he did because this bas is great. My next project is a bag with Melody Miller fabric – I am a bit scared of messing it up but I am going to take the plunge!
Very pretty! That is one of my favorite prints from Chicopee because it's not too orange and with just enough red. Well done!

This is very pretty.
That's a good looking bag. I agree with you about the color.
Very nice and was cool tweaks to the pattern to make it your own!
What a great bag!! Its time for me to make a new bag, too. I'll have to check this pattern out!
lovely, my mother-in-law would apreciate it a lot, she's mad with reds
It is beautiful! I think that is one of my favorite prints from Chicopee. And yes, if your husband notices you need a new bag it is definitely time!
Gorgeous!
Love how neat it is.

Wow what an eye catching bag! =D
It looks fab, your husband is obviously a wise man ;o)
Lovely bag – it looks like the perfect size! And great to put in a loop for your keys – fishing for those in your bag must rate as one of the most annoying things ever!
Beautiful job, Nicole! I love the colors you picked!
Awesome bag Nicole π
Amazing bag Nicole. It's beautiful!
Nicole, darling, when the husband says you need a new bag, you just need to ask, "Which man shall I get it from? Louis, Gucci or Prada?" He is so lucky that you make your own, don't let him forget!
This bag is totally awesome! I love everything about it!!
gorgeous! I love the color!
Congrats on your finish! A messenger bag always comes in handy, and I love your fabric choice. π Thanks for linking up to Craft Book Month!
I love how this turned out Nicole! That orange print is one of my favorites from the line. It's such a perfect bag for autumn!
Orange and green make a perfect combination β they somehow remind me of a water melon. Hehe. At first glimpse, I thought you bought the whole bag from a classy shop. You certainly did a fantastic job with it! Itβs beautiful. π
