Tutorial: Remixed 9-Patch Block

by Nicole

Welcome to the July Block of the Blogger’s Block of the Month! This blog hop is hosted by Dhia of Peach Patch Quilts.

 Peach Patch Quilts

For this month’s block, I made an improv block that I’m calling Remixed 9-Patch. It comes together quickly and is a great way to use up scraps, even those skinny little pieces that are too pretty to throw out.

Remixed 9 patch

To make this block you’ll need:

  • A bunch of scraps, ranging in width from .75″ to 2″
  • White background fabric – cut 4 squares at 3.5″ x 3.5″
To piece this block:

  • Start by sewing together pairs of scraps. Try to piece together scraps of different values to maximize the contrast. For more on value in quilting, check out Janet Wickell’s post here.
  • Trim away uneven edges.
  • Sew pairs together and trim to even the edges. Try trimming on an angle to give visual interest.

  •  Continue piecing until the unit measures at least 4″ on all sides.
  • Trim to 3.5″ x 3.5″.
  • Repeat until you have 5 pieced squares. Sew together with the background squares as shown to create a 9.5″ x 9.5″ block.

If you plan on making a whole quilt with this block, try creating an alternating block made of  4 pieced squares and 5 background squares.

Enjoy your Remixed 9-Patch block!

What a cool idea – I have TONNES of these wee scraps, am completely unable to chuck out odd shaped bits. Now I can use them, and have another UFO lying around looking photogenic 😀

I like this idea very much. Something my kiddos would enjoy sewing since there aren't any rules on those improv squares!!
